Hirohiko Taniguchi ("Tani")

Managing Director, Chief Strategy Officer

Hirohiko Taniguchi (“Tani”) is Managing Director, Chief Strategy Officer at Manufacturers Bank and was appointed to the position in May 2022.

Prior to his current assignment, Tani was General Manager of the Global Portfolio Strategy Planning Department of SMBC Tokyo and Director of SMBC Rail Services, LLC, which is a rail car leasing company located in Chicago. At that time, he was appointed as outside commissioner of PT Oto Multiartha and PT Summit Oto Finance, Indonesian auto loan companies, affiliates of SMBC; Tani retains those commissioner responsibilities today.

In his earlier career, Tani joined SMBC’s predecessor bank, the former Sumitomo Bank, in 1993. Then, he was appointed as a loan officer in Marunouchi Branch in Tokyo and in charge of middle-large corporations, mainly listed companies in Japan. He was also tasked with establishing brand-new collateral programs, such as financing music royalties and software copyrights.

For approximately 20 years, Tani promoted consolidated businesses and supervised group companies at SMBC Tokyo head office. One of his most notable assignments was in the Subsidiaries and Affiliates Department of SMBC Tokyo where he led projects such as: Acquisition and Post-Merger Integration, Promise (current SMBC Consumer Finance, the second largest consumer loan company in Japan), Societe General Private Banking Japan, Retail Business of Citibank Japan, (current SMBC Trust Bank), and establishing JSOL (one of SMBC group IT companies). Tani was also responsible for managing group companies of SMBC, taking charge of Japan Financial Services Agency (“JFSA”), and improving the internal rule of administration of group companies.   

Tani has been assigned to the Global Banking Unit of SMBC based in Tokyo since 2018. In that role, he has been responsible for acquiring BTPN (an Indonesian local bank), post-merger integration of SMBC Indonesia and BTPN, and entering into the Philippines market to accelerate SMBC’s “Multi-Franchise Strategy”, which aims to establish a second SMBC focus in certain Asian countries to grow the bank as the country grows.       

Tani earned a Bachelor of Economics degree from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan.
